Pharmacie Roasters’ move from a characterful Hove mews to a vast industrial unit outside Lewes offered scale, opportunity and operational freedom—but little atmosphere. The utilitarian space, once used for vehicle storage, lacked the personality, craft and warmth at the heart of the Pharmacie brand. REAFE Studio was appointed to reimagine the site from the ground up, shaping a cost-effective yet expressive environment that could support growth across every aspect of the business.
Our approach began with a deep understanding of the rhythms of roasting. We master-planned the unit to accommodate a larger, more efficient roastery; a dedicated slot-roasting area; expanded green-bean storage; wholesale and retail zones; and improved packaging, cupping and tasting facilities. Training areas for roasting and barista skills were integrated alongside a flexible event space, ensuring the building could support both industry and community. A café anchors the experience, with seating and kitchen areas designed to expand naturally during the warmer months.
To bring clarity and cohesion to this diverse programme, we introduced a monolithic, three-dimensional architectural wrap—an immersive gesture that references local vernacular forms while giving structure, identity and warmth to the interior. The roasting equipment sits at the heart of this sculptural envelope, with all supporting activities flowing around it in a considered, intuitive sequence. The design was developed to be implemented quickly and with minimal disruption, allowing production to continue as the space transformed.
The result is an authentic, atmospheric home for Pharmacie Roasters: a space that elevates everyday craft, celebrates the brand’s process and creates an adaptable framework for future expansion.
